Lot 1053
PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Cleopatra VII Thea Neotera, 51-30 BC. Tetradrachm (Subaeratus, 26 mm, 7.45 g, 12 h), a contemporary plated imitation (?). Imitating Alexandria, RY 21 = 32/1. Diademed head of Ptolemy I to right, wearing aegis. Rev. BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ [ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟ]Υ Eagle standing to left on thunderbolt, with wings closed and palm branch over shoulder; to left, L KA above headdress of Isis; to right, ΠA. Cf. SNG Copenhagen 391 and Svoronos 1868 (for prototype). Porosity and scratches, otherwise, about very fine.

From the private collection of the Swiss Archaeologist Philipp Reto Huser (1962-2025), privately acquired from Swaric on 25 September 2001.

Even for a late Ptolemaic tetradrachm, the weight of 7.45 grams is dramatically low. Although there are no visible traces of a bronze core, it is likely a fourrée (a plated coin).
